Hungry Mother’s Barry Maiden Is a Food & Wine Best New Chef

Barry Maiden of Hungry Mother will be named as one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs of 2009 at the party for the awards later tonight (related: we were totally right!). Maiden is a Virginia native, but he’s been in Boston for years, working in high-end restaurants like L’Espalier and Lumiere. His Southern roots are visible on the Hungry Mother menu in dishes like uber-porky boudin balls, cornmeal catfish with hoppin’ john, baked grits, and, of course, the restaurant’s signature boiled peanuts.

We’ll be attending the Best New Chefs party tonight where the winners will be formally announced and we’ll be live-tweeting the whole thing, as well as providing complete coverage here tomorrow. Grub Street and MP: San Francisco have more about the winners.
