Like namesake, like restaurant: Al Capone has been seized by State Police for nonpayment of taxes, reports the Globe. The popular Financial District sandwich shop owes the state $45,385.90, mostly in meal taxes dating back to the end of 2004. The Globe did not shy away from pointing out the irony in the situation, calling on chemist and Al Capone regular John Verban: “”I’m up on my history. The way they bagged that other Capone was via taxes, too.”
It remains to be seen whether Al Capone will weather this storm or follow the lead of “that other Capone” and die in (metaphorical) jail, but either way, expect Sam La Grassa’s to be a little more crowded than usual until this all calms down.
Update: Per a commenter, it is now reopened. A call to the restaurant revealed that the bill has been paid.
