An Interview With Best New Chef Barry Maiden

As we reported, Hungry Mother’s Barry Maiden was officially named a Best New Chef 2009 by Food & Wine Magazine last night. Grub Street has more on the party, but we have an interview with the man himself.

MenuPages: So first of all, congratulations!
Barry Maiden: Thank you!

MP: How long have you known?
BM: About two weeks.

MP: Has it been easy keeping the secret?
BM: It was really hard. I only told a few select people and my family in rural Virginia!

MP: Do you have any plans for anything new at Hungry Mother or for opening a new restaurant?
BM: Not currently. We are thinking ahead about what would be some good new options for us and how we could branch out but as of now, there’s nothing in the works. We’ll see where this takes us!

MP: Other than your own, what are your favorite Boston restaurants to eat at?
BM: I often frequent Eastern Standard. I love neighborhood places. So I go to R.F. O’Sullivan’s for a good burger. It depends on what you’re in the mood for. If you’re in the mood for good ethnic, you can go to Chinatown or get some Brazilian food somewhere.

MP: Where in Boston do you live?
BM: I live in Somerville, right outside of Davis Square. It’s a great neighborhood.

MP: Who do you think is going to win the Best Chef: Northeast award at the Beards?
BM: I’m actually rooting for [Lumiere’s] Mr. Michael Leviton. He was a mentor of mine before I opened Hungry Mother, so my hat’s off to him and I hope he wins.
