Massachusetts Wants to Be Maine

Massachusetts is considering turning its fish into a brand a la Maine lobsters and Alaskan crab, reports the Globe. The move is part of an overall trend toward seafood branding; in recent months, Louisiana has been looking to make “Louisiana shrimp” a household phrase and Rhode Island has begun slapping a logo onto quahog carriers. The fish branding trend would seem to run contrary to America’s ever-increasing obsession with locavorism, since the whole point is to market fish to wider areas and to imply that a certain product (lobster, crab, etc.) is better imported than purchased locally. Massachusetts hasn’t decided on which fish to brand yet, though cod seems to be in the lead. A hearing on the bill proposing a branding program is expected today.
