Is Yo! Berry's Closing the Beginning of the Fro-Yo Backlash?

Super 88 Pinkberry knockoff Yo! Berry is no longer. Yo! Berry was the first major fro-yo-erie to open in Boston and now, it will be the first to close. Could this be the beginning of a Boston fro-yo backlash? Fro-yo shops opened in New York well before Boston and they've been dropping like flies for the past year (this week alone, GSNY has had news of three!). Boston is a major league ice cream town and we're not sure a city this cold can sustain a market for two frozen treats. What do you think? Is Yo! Berry's closing an isolated incident or the beginning of a backlash?

  • In my humble opinion I think several factors come into play. 1) Frozen yogurt novelty has worn off--as evidenced by revenue/sales figures from major froyo shops in NY 2) It's a seasonal business in a down economy. Think about how much of your disposable income, during the winter, under tighter budgets gets allocated to frozen treats? 3) Access to fro yo in Boston was never given a fair chance. I think opening a shack on Newbury would have been a smart move. While the overhead costs would be slightly more expensive the traffic generated to a centrally located venue would have more than made up for the seasonal effects.
