Somerville Breakfast War Gets Violent

The longstanding Breakfast War between Ball Square restaurateurs Mike Moccia of Ball Square Cafe and SoundBites’ Yasser Mirza erupted in fisticuffs on Saturday, reports the Somerville News Blog. The two breakfast restaurateurs have been feuding since 2007, when Moccia, Mizra’s landlord, sent SoundBites packing and opened his own restaurant in the same space. The beef escalated, attracting the attention of Somerville mayor Joseph Curtatone, until 2008, when Moccia delivered a letter of reconciliation to Mizra, to no avail.

On Saturday, Moccia and Mizra began arguing on the street, with things quickly turning physical. Moccia broke his knuckle while punching Mizra. As anyone who’s breakfasted in Ball Square knows, this is not a dispute on which one may remain neutral (Mizra has been known to kick out customers he suspects of patronizing Ball Square Cafe), so tell us: whose side are you on?
