What to Eat on a Picnic

It is currently a ridiculous 90 degrees in Boston and that means it's time for a picnic. Whether you want to dine with the masses the Public Gardens or Boston Common or go slightly further off the beaten path at the Riverway or in the Arboretum, we've got your guide to new restaurants nearby.

Arboretum: Grab some calamari and a pizza from Roslindale's new Cafe Rialto, which opened last month. From there, it's just a few minutes walk to the Rozzy section of the park.

Boston Common: Beacon Hill Bistro is about to launch a picnic basket service. Call an hour in advance and order anything from the special picnic menu, which includes everything from the restaurant's lentil and farro burger to a Maine crab roll, and when you show up, your order will be waiting in a basket, along with a blanket.

Emerald Necklace: Cutty's is just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Riverway. Their sandwich selection is an embarrassment of riches: better get several for you and a friend to split.

Public Garden: Little-known fact: Bistro du Midi does takeout. The heat means you'll probably want to forgo the excellent lamb cannelloni, but a Niçoise salad ought to do you nicely.
