City Council president Mike Ross recently submitted an order for a regulatory hearing on the city’s food trucks, reports Dishing. Unlike politicians in New York (where a city councilor recently introduced a measure that would endanger the license of any truck that received parking violations) and Chicago (where the trucks are banned altogether) Ross seems enthusiastic about food trucks in general (and, weirdly, very committed to referring to them as “mobile restaurants”), writing “The mobile restaurants industry has the unique potential to create new employment opportunities, small business growth and support for existing small businesses, and favorable conditions for culinary entrepreneurs in Boston and its neighborhoods.”
Ross insists that, despite the note of fear many food truck owners might feel upon hearing the word “regulate,” his intent is actually to simplify the permitting process. “We need to roll out the welcome mat for businesses, let people know Boston is a business-friendly city, embrace innovation. Food trucks are welcome,” Ross tells the Globe. He also mentions that he thinks Boston could support 50-100 food trucks. A date has not yet been set for the hearing.
