Bacco’s Wine & Cheese celebrates their grand opening tonight on the outskirts of Bay Village, at 31 St. James Avenue. The thirsty and curious can indulge in champagne, wine, Iggy’s bread, cheese, prosciutto, and more. Owner Bob Bacco, late of much-maligned De Luca’s, paused to chat after intercepting a fly-wheel slicer.

“This is one of those areas that straddles the Back Bay and Bay Village and the South End; most people think of it as a financial area because there’s so many high-rise businesses. But there are also lots of condo units. It’s just a regular neighborhood,” he tells us. Swarming, one hopes, with people craving delicacies like aged balsamic, pate, Spanish meats, and top-notch olive and truffle oils.

The shop has been in the works for almost two years; a soft opening happened right before Thanksgiving. “The response has been terrific,” Bacco beams, despite the area’s “often forgotten” location. Stop in tonight or tomorrow from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. to sample the wares.
