Booze You Can Use

With holiday and party season well behind us, is your liquor cabinet a mishmash of half-empties of who-knows-what? Don’t rush to toss the unknowns and “liquor leftovers” says Stuff. You could be missing out on some fabulous home-concocted libations. (And we’re not just talking about Hurricanes.)

Extra peach schnapps? Simone Nakhoul, general manager at Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen, says a great cocktail can be made by steeping 10 bags of English Breakfast tea in the actual bottle of alcohol. Then combine 1.5 ounces of the tea laced liquor with 1.5 ounces of bourbon, .75 ounces of lemon juice and 3 ounces of unsweetened black tea. Voila. Betcha never thought schnapps could come close to resembling anything semi-sophisticated.

If you’re unlucky enough to have Midori hiding in that liquor cabinet, Stephanie Clarkson, a Boston-area private bartender, suggests swapping it for triple sec in a margarita. It’s a nice way to balance out the drink’s typical sour qualities, she says.

Of course, if all else fails, there’s always punch, which requires less precise measuring and more opportunities for creativity. Just don’t pour everything from your leftover pile into that bowl at once.
