Lawrence Is A Hot Dog Hot Spot

We don’t usually think of Lawrence as a dining destination … except when it comes to delicious, snappy, zesty hot dogs! The city to our north is, of course, home to legendary hot dog stand Lawton’s. The 80-year-old shop closed down recently, disappointing generations of loyalists. But all might not be lost. More hot-dog hijinx ahead.

According to the Eagle-Tribune, Lawrence Famous Frankfurters will open in the former Lawton’s Famous Frankfurters location. “There’s a hunger out there for hot dogs and we’re going to fill it,” new owner Mike Graffeo promises.

Meanwhile, Lawton’s owners plan to reopen across town, in an “exact replica” of their old building. But is Lawrence big enough for two hot dog stands? The warring hot dog vendors continue to lash out at each other in the press, each accusing the other of stealing their business and generally behaving like copycats. (Among other things, Graffeo is accused of mimicking the old Lawton’s signage.)

As for us, we relish the idea of too many hot dog stands!
