Raise A Scorpion Bowl to Kowloon’s William Wong

Here at Grub Street, we like to poke a tiny bit of good-hearted fun at the tiki-tacky Kowloon restaurant. Yes, it’s garish. Yes, it’s cheesy. But it’s a landmark nonetheless, and we were saddened to learn of Kowloon founder William Wong’s passing at the hearty age of 88. His funeral was held this morning; he passed away at Mass General over the weekend. He opened the Mandarin monstrosity in 1950 and worked 16-hour shifts to keep the place going. We’ll sip an umbrella drink tonight in his honor. [Globe]
