Meet the awesomely named Candy Gold, Newton sandwich-maker, whose temptingly unusual brisket sandwich has landed her on the Cooking Channel! The Globe reports that Gold got her sandwich start while scrolling the channels late one New Year’s Eve, “looking for my buddy Dick Clark.” While Dick failed to appear, Gold did see an ad for a local TV cooking show that was looking for hosts. The rest, as they say, is history.

Gold debuted “Neighborhood Cooking” on local station NewTV, which airs in nine communities around Boston. Gold spotlights other neighborhood chefs on her show, declaring optimistically that “Everybody is the star of their own kitchen, and everybody has food stories.”

So, while Gold might not be Paula Deen quite yet, her fortunes could change this weekend: She was selected to show off her brisket sandwich to the masses on the Cooking Channel’s The Perfect 3 after submitting her recipe and a video to the network. Her prized creation is made with Swiss cheese, homemade pickles and coleslaw, and a caramelized onion spread with shallots, leeks, and scallions. Gulp. Actually, this sounds a bit healthier than many of Rachael Ray and Deen’s delicacies.

Do note: While the vivacious home cook doesn’t make money from her community show, “At some point, putting this in a situation where I get paid for it would be really nice,” she tells the paper. Hint hint? Catch Gold at 4 p.m. this Saturday.
