Mantra, the Lindsay Lohan of Downtown Crossing restaurants (it peaked in about 2001, then experienced a sad downhill slide), is closing. The clubby Indian spot will shutter as operator One World Cuisine attempts to "reposition" its line of Boston restaurants, which also include Back Bay's Mumbai Chopstix and Davis Square's Diva.
Cafe of India, their Harvard Square restaurant, will also shut down. On the plus side, one of our long-held dreams will come true: The team plans to open a high-end Indian restaurant on the waterfront. Aside from Harvard Square's Maharaja, Boston is sorely lacking in the fine-Indian-dining department. Stay tuned.
