Vegans

Vegan Soul Food? Yep.

Allegedly, according to Luke Tsai at the East Bay Express, there’s a guy doing vegan mac-and-cheese with shiitake “bacon” on top that tastes as good as the real thing. The guy’s name is Elijah Joy, and he looks like a real character (and yes, we mean that in most positive, 1960s-euphemistic kind of way). He’s operating his vegan soul food pop-up out of the Tutti Frutti frozen yogurt shop in Oakland Chinatown (388 9th Street), and he says he’ll be there, “every day until Jesus comes.” Also, Joy claims to have been the personal chef for Isaac Hayes, which may or may not be true. Seriously, if Tsai keeps finding stuff like this and that crazy Thai restaurant in Alameda that’s also a toy-racecar track, we’re really going to like this guy. [EBX]
