Should Welfare Recipients Get Dessert?

Whoopie pie warrior Andrea Taber doesn’t think people should use food stamps to buy pie. She sells whoopies at the Braintree Farmer’s Market, which accepts payment from EBT cardholders, but she might jump ship based on their welfare policies. The proprietor of the (possibly misnamed) Ever So Humble Pie Co. tells the Herald: “I don’t think American taxpayers should be footing the bill for people’s pie purchases.”

Farmers’ market fruits and veggies are OK, she says, but she’ll refuse to peddle her wares at the market if forced to sell to EBT cardholders. “I’m not going to sacrifice my principles and standards for the sake of a few more sales,” she says. Basically she places buying dessert using food stamps on the same questionable level as using taxpayers’ money at the nail salon.

So, are whoopie pies a luxury or part of a well-rounded diet? We’re going to go with the latter. Really, pie is basically a birthright. Speaking of which: Did we ever figure out which state invented the damn things in the first place?
