The Weekly’s Anna Roth sets out to the Sunset this week to review Ming Kee, the sit-down Chinese BBQ place at 2191 Irving Street (at 23rd) that recently replaced Toon Kee, and is the resurrection of fire-damaged Happy Bakery & Deli, formerly on Ocean Avenue. Tasting Table recently had some good things to say about Ming Kee’s yellow-feather chicken and soy-sauce chicken, and Roth is similarly in love with both. She’s also a big fan of their roast duck with its “skin as bronzed and smooth as the former governor of California, and a round, savory flavor redolent of five-spice.” [SF Weekly]

At the East Bay Express, Luke Tsai reviews a pair of butcher shops that also sell sandwiches: Star Meats (3068 Claremont Avenue, Berkeley), and The Local Butcher Shop (1600 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley). He says he “never had a bad sandwich” at The Local Butcher Shop, and both places have solid roast beef. But he reserves his biggest praise for the Local’s roast beef sandwich: “This was savory, full-flavored meat — moist enough, and delicious enough, to eat by itself. And, gilding the lily, the taste of high-quality olive oil — from the house-made aioli — lingered, deliciously, in my mouth.” [EBX]
