Yesterday news broke that spinach falafel queen Ana Sortun will open a new restaurant in Somerville just the latest in a cascade of openings large and small. Doo Wee & Rice
This chicken-and-rice parlor in Powderhouse Circle came out of nowhere and we're so glad it did. Have you had their fries doused in white sauce with crispy chicken hearts yet?
Sausages and pretzels in Union Square? Executed by perfectionist Tim Wiechmann? With an outdoor beer garden? Yeah, we can't wait for this place to open (which it should in early 2013).
We'll have four Model Ts, please. And one milk punch.
3 Little Figs
Sumptuous sweet-tater sandwiches, peach slabs, pastries, and friendly people aplenty. Our new go-to lunch spot.
Whoever got the bright idea of stuffing potatoes with shrimp stroganoff deserves the carb equivalent of a Nobel Prize.
They're still working out some service kinks, but Amsterdam Falafelshop makes up for it with their dazzling toppings bar and unlimited supply of garlic mayo. A fine alternative to Davis Square's burrito bonanza, we say.
Ana Sortun's New Restaurant
She'll move into 249 Pearl St., formerly the Paddock, in 2013. Prices will be lower than at Oleana, which is deliciously dangerous. Pictured here are her luscious spinach falafel balls, a favorite of Blue Hill chef Dan Barber. Will she serve them in Somerville? We can hope.
This tiny tapas temple in Union Square serves one of our favorite dishes of all time: albondigas, beef meatballs drenched in a haunting tomato guava sauce.
A veggie lover's paradise! Dosa Temple serves humungous crepes stuffed exclusively with vegetables, coupled with homemade sauces and chutnies, for cheap. We still need to hit up their weekend lunch buffet.
Cantina La Mexicana
These guys were in Union Square before it was cool. Friendly service, great prices, lethal margaritas, and some of the finest chicken and cactus tacos (pictured) in town. There's also takeout service with killer combo meals for about $6.
