With a few holes apparent in the widespread, internecine Zankou empire, it should be expected that a few other enterprising chicken entrepreneurs might rise up to challenge the chain’s Mediterranean poultry crown. Beverly Chicken is one such upstart with the wits to include L.A.’s favorite bird in its name, opening mid-January at Wilshire Center.

The restaurant is the clever invention of the guy who owns the 10 Minute Oil change garage next door. As in, “while you wait for your car to be serviced, may we direct you to a Halal menu of grilled chicken a la brasa, chicken, beef, and kefta kabob, hummus, tabbouleh, falafel, pita, and chicken shawarma on a spit?” Word is, a few oil change customers have even been tempted inside by the lure of some complimentary Middle Eastern spreads. Pretty smart, guys.

At night, the place is also known to turn into a hookah lounge, while prices find a whole chicken for $8.99 and Yelp reviews, whether through influence or genuine quality, are currently edging out at five stars.

Beverly Chicken, 3909 Beverly Blvd. Hollywood; 323-660-8200.
