Following quickly on Rosamunde’s Oakland outpost comes The Hog’s Apothecary, which we first wrote about a few months back. The East Bay Express now has some more details about the place, which is aiming for a spring opening. It will, as we’d heard, be a sausage-centric beer hall at 375 40th Street in Oakland, right near Homeroom — which blazed a trail for restaurants on this strip a full two years ago.

This is a first venture for co-owners John Streit and Bradford Earle. Streit will be the chef, and he’s worked at both Pizzaiolo and Rotten City Pizza. In addition to sausage, he’ll be doing house-made mustards and sauerkrauts, and Bavarian-style pretzels. Earle will cover the front of house, and he’s currently a manager at Park Avenue Bar and Grill, and he promises to feature all American microbreweries in the taps, particularly ones from the West Coast. As he puts it, “We can get a Belgian-style beer that’s made here, so we don’t need to wait five months for it to ship overseas.”

Last year brought the opening of Telegraph (2318 Telegraph Avenue), the beer garden and restaurant that took over the former Mama Buzz Cafe in Uptown. They serve a selection of housemade sausages such as whiskey-fennel, wild boar, and chicken curry. There’s a side patio with picnic tables, and a bunch of bottled domestic and imported beers. Also, there’s coffee, and bagels and vegan donuts in the morning. And according to a Chowhounder, there seem to be plans for a more fully built out kitchen coming down the line.*

And we shouldn’t neglect to mention yet another beer garden, with an attached café, called Lost and Found, from the people behind The Layover, which is opening at 2040 Telegraph (at 21st). Their website is live, but we we don’t have an ETA on that one.

Suffice it to say, Oakland is getting very sudsy, and sausage-y.
